Review: Joe Fresh Nail Polishes

By Kellness · May 27, 2010 · 0 Comments · 224 Views

As a Canadian, there’s many truly Canadian things that I love; Tim Hortons, the Vancouver Canucks, and poutine just to name a few. But one thing that I miss most about Canada, is the Joe Fresh line of clothing and accessories available at Superstore. They have some super cute clothes and bags for super cheap, I can’t help but make it one of my must-do stops when I go home to visit. So when I heard that Joe Fresh was coming out with a line of beauty products and nail polishes I hopped on a plane made a call to my BFF and insisted he snatch me up some of the nail polishes to try out.

The polishes come in a wide range of colors, you can check them out on the Joe Fresh website. The bottles are $4 a pop which makes them completely affordable. The spring collection of shades is completely on-trend with some fabulous pastel shades that aren’t to be missed. The polish is also free of harmful chemicals like formaldehyde, toluene, DBP and camphor.

The bottles are hard to find, BFF said there was a limited selection, so you might have to do some searching.

The formula on the ones I received was nice, 2 coats was perfect for great coverage. No streaking. They can peal easily if you don’t use a base coat so I definitely recommend one (I like Orly Bonder).

So if you’re in Canada and want some cute summer nail polishes for super cheap, be sure to check out Joe Fresh.

Cut Your Hair, Save the Planet

By Kellness · May 26, 2010 · 0 Comments · 18 Views

If you haven’t heard this already, the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is one of the worst oil spills in US history. Roughly 2600 oil spills that occur annually around the world harming marine animals and birds as well as harming the ecosystem. Oil spills can take months to even years to clean up, and the repercussions are upsetting.

So what can we do about it? Turns out helping might be as simple as getting a haircut. Salons all over the country are stepping up to the plate, turns out those bags and bags full of hair clippings that normally make their way to our landfills are really helpful in the effort to help stop the spread of oil. The hair collected goes toward making a dense mat that helps soak up the oil.

So if your in need of a trim try finding a participating salon near you and, in the words of Bill Nye the Science Guy, change the world!

Review: Smashbox Heartbreaker Kiss ‘N Tell Eye Shadow Palette

By Kellness · May 26, 2010 · 0 Comments · 133 Views

For Spring 2010 Smashbox came out with a Heartbreaker collection including mascara, lip gloss, cheek color and 2 fabulous eye shadow palettes containing 6 gorgeous shades each. One of the eye shadow palettes was aptly named “Kiss ‘N Tell”, which pretty much meant that I -had- to get ahold of it!

Anyway It wasn’t easy to find, I searched high and low, and lo and behold to my huge excitement I FINALLY found it.

According to the box: This eye shadow palette will have you looking stunning in seconds. In 6 gorgeous shades to always keep him guessing. Just remember - heartbreakers never kiss ‘n tell.

Luckily for you I DO kiss and tell, so here’s the scoop:

The mirrored palette is on the smallish side, about the size of a credit card. It contains 6 fun colors and a mini shadow brush which isn’t really dense so I’ll probably skip it.

The eyeshadows are nicely pigmented and not too glittery. Included is Ballet Pink a soft light pink that has a nice sheen to it, Hot Pink a true hot pink with micro-glitter, Icy White a white with a nice sheen, Deep Violet a mid-tone violet purple with a hint of blue sheen, Charcoal a true matte black and Peony another light pinky natural peony color.

All in all, I love this palette and the shadow pigment seems great and I can’t wait to try out some new looks with it. Stay tuned for swatches.

Breezy Summer Hair-do: Hair Braided with Scarves

By Kellness · May 26, 2010 · 2 Comments · 77 Views

This is a cute look for spring/summer and adds some color and fun to the regular loose braided look that’s hot right now.

All you need is a simple light scarf, silk or satin will work, you can find them almost anywhere like Forever21 or Charlotte Russe for super cheap. You want to look for one that’s light and on the small side so it wont weight down your hair.

To get this look, start out by gathering your hair into a low ponytail, don’t worry if some pieces aren’t long enough it doesn’t have to be perfect. Next take your scarf and find the middle and tie it around the ponytail to secure it. Then divide the hair into 3 sections adding the scarf to 2 of the sections and loosely braid the hair with the scarf securing it at the end letting the ends of the scarf hang loose.

There you have it,  a great way to spice up a regular braid for a bright, fun summer look.
